Successful advocacy on Fire Services levy

As part of the Victorian Budget, the Treasurer announced measures that would have materially increased the fire services levy applicable to renewable energy projects.

Marilyne Crestias, in her role as Policy Director for Clean Energy Investor Group, warned that Victoria would need to ramp up its efforts in order to meet its climate targets and that the increased tax could act as a deterrent.

The Guardian picked up on the story and quoted Marilyne as saying:

“The will is there from clean energy investors but we need clearer policy from the government,” she said. “Clarity will help drive investment and ensure we limit global warming to 1.5C.”

The Guardian further quoted Marilyne as saying:

“This change risks making Victoria a less attractive place for renewables investment compared to other states or even overseas,” Crestias said. “We don’t want to deter international capital from being invested in the state.”
